Ghana as Africa’s cleanest country on course as Zoomlion sites solid waste plant in E/R

President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reiterated his conviction of Ghana becoming the cleanest country in Africa within the next few years.

His conviction stems from his government’s partnership with Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZLG) to establish waste management plants in all regions across the country.

He was speaking at the sod cutting ceremony for the construction of the Eastern Solid Waste Treatment Facility at Effiduase in the Eastern region.

“It is my utmost heart desire that in two or three years time, when we are taking an index of African countries with the best environment, we can say the Black Star as usual, [is] number one in Africa”, he averred.

A similar project worth $95 million has been completed and commissioned in Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital, which is the largest composting and recycling plant in Africa.

The Western, Bono, Greater Accra, Bono East together with the Ahafo, Western North regions have already had sod cutting ceremonies for the commencement of similar projects, making them 8 in total.

Prez commends CEO and Minister

In his address, President Akufo-Addo extoled the Executive Chairman of Jospong Group of Companies, who doubles as Chief Executive Officer of ZGL, Joseph Siaw Agyepong, and the Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaa, for teaming up in making Ghana the cleanest city in Africa dream a reality.

“Two people deserve to be commended, firstly, Joseph Siaw Agyepong, CEO of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, who purported to propel the private sector to foster development for the nation. That is why government is also supporting him to succeed in such initiative”, the President indicated.

“The next person to be commended is the Sanitation and Water Resources Minister, Cecilia Abena Dapaa. In fact, I have many ministers in my government and I can say this woman is unique. She is hardworking and always up to task”, he added.

President Akufo-Addo believes the duo’s partnership has bequeathed the nation with massive developments and deserve commendation.

He pleaded with Mr. Agyepong to ensure all 16 regions get their own, so that the “Ghana as the cleanest city in Africa mantra would be fulfilled.”

In a brief statement at the event, CEO of ZGL, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies, Joseph Siaw Agyepong expressed his appreciation to President Akufo-Addo for supporting the private sector.

He indicated government’s support is what has made the dream a reality.

Mr. Agyepong added “the plant will provide 75 direct employment and also for some 250 other people” when completed.

Present at the sod cutting were the traditional authorities, Clergy, Ministers of state, MMDCEs and inhabitants of Effiduase and its environs.
