The Central Regional Police Command is appealing for quarterly disinfection of its facilities to ameliorate all forms of viral infections.
The Regional Police Commander, DCOP Habiba Twumasi Sarfo made the appeal during the second phase of the Ghana Police Service Covid-19 disinfection.
DCOP Sarfo noted “the exercise is very important to us. As a police institution we have a lot of clients coming on board everyday. Our doors are opened, we receive complainants, suspects into our cells so when it is fumigated it means that we are protected, the suspects are protected, our clients are also protected so it’s very important. We are happy and thank the administration and Zoomlion for organising this for us and we will wish that every quarter we will have it because everyday we receive different clients into our cells.”
She indicated even though the virus is fast spreading and causing a lot of danger, the personnel adherence to the protocols has protected them from contracting the virus.
She is therefore optimistic that, the disinfection, interspersed with adherence to the protocols will save many from the pandemic.
“…We are also enforcing the use of the mask and encouraging members of the public to also use it so we are putting all these things together with this fumigation exercises, all together, holistically, will support all of us to protect our men, our clients and all visitors into our charge offices, our cells and offices”.
Regarding recalcitrant residents on observation of protocols, the Command has adopted the “carrot and stick” according to her, and also “going about sensitising them and partnered with other institutions to deliver free masks and sanitisers and we will continue to enforce it as directed by the President and the IGP.”

DCOP Sarfo reiterated the public are made to understand the usage of the Personal Protective Equipment is in their own interest.
She added her Command recorded some cases the previous year, but due to the strict adherence to the protocols, they have not recorded any case this year and hopes it remains so perpetually.
Meanwhile, the Central Regional Vector Control Manager for Zoomlion, Gideon Sogbey indicated their target is to get all the cells, offices and barracks in almost a 120 facilities across the region disinfected.
He noted whilst the exercise is ongoing at the Regional Headquarters, there are teams disinfecting the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem (KEEA), Awutu Senya West, Effutu, Abura Asebu Kwamankese and all other district and municipal commands and units within the Central Region.
Mr. Sogbey further expressed optimism for minimised cases because of the ongoing exercise.
“It is our hope that this exercise that we are currently undertaking will as much as possible minimise the Covid-19 new strains that we are having in the country,” he noted.
He also noted the chemicals being used is effective to combat the new strain of the virus since it is in compliance with the World Health Organisation’s directive.
“The only acceptable chemical for disinfecting that has been approved by WHO is 5% chlorine solution [and] that is what we are adhering to and we are using since the inception of the Covid-19 situation.”
Ghana Police Command and Staff College, Winneba
From the Central Regional Police headquarters, the team moved to the Bakano Police barracks, Ghana Police Command and Staff College at Winneba, the Police Band, Barracks, and the Central Police Command, all at Winneba.
At the Ghana Police Command and Staff College, the Acting Commander in charge, Chief Supt. Samuel Asiedu Okanta, noted the exercise reduces the possibility of someone contracting the virus within their facility.
He explained the disinfection “makes it very negligible because we’ve sprayed all the college. The classrooms, the lecture halls, cells, charge office and we’ve done the same thing at the Winneba Divisional headquarters” and all the units within.
He said they have not recorded any case in their outfit due to the discipline attached to adherence to the protocols. However, the disinfection “will boost our confidence because you don’t know what you may contract elsewhere when you enter a certain place.”
He commended the authorities and all those who made the exercise possible.
