Austrian Consul General urges gov’t support for Jospong to address sanitation

Austrian Consul General to Ghana, Rosemary Orthner has urged Government of Ghana (GoG) to continually provide support to the Jospong Group of Companies (JGC).

She says the collaboration between government and Zoomlion Ghana Limited will help address the sanitation needs of the country.

Ms. Orthner revealed the Austrian government’s readiness to assist the JGC, but also needed the cooperation of GoG due to the enormity of the task.

The Consul General said Zoomlion’s track record in waste management is enviable in the sub region, the reason GoG must support them to eradicate Ghana’s waste challenges for the benefit of its citizens.

She said this during a working and familiarization visit to selected waste management facilities of the Jospong Group of Companies in Accra.

Martin Orthner, Honorary Vice Consul and Gifty Tornu Esenam, Consular Assistant were with her.

Ms. Orthner expressed satisfaction in the operations of JGC/Zoomlion from the observations they made.

“We have heard a lot about the Jospong Group and Zoomlion specifically but we never anticipated that the company is so well developed and organized already beyond imagination” she reckoned.

Jospong COO briefs team

The group was briefed in a presentation by the Chief Operating Officer of the Jospong Apex Group, Dr. Samanjith Udumalagaba.

With it’s vision of being the leaders in Africa holding in every sector they operate, Dr. Udumalagaba said they are motivated by changing peoples lives.

He said the JGC is worth several millions of dollars and has over 45 subsidiary companies operating in 16 sectors of the economy under a five cluster group namely, Environment and Sanitation, Financial Services, Information and Technology, Commercial and Allied Services and Technical and Logistics across the globe.

Some countries in the sub region where the company operates are Nigeria, Togo, Liberia, Equatorial Guinea, Zambia and Angola.

He added the group also has operational offices in China and the United Arab Emirates whilst currently exploring avenues in other countries.

Dr. Udumalagala appealed to the Austrian Consulate to bring more investors to partner with the JGC in all the sectors they operate.

Accra Sewerage Systems Ltd

The team was also led to the Accra Sewerage Systems Ltd which has provided a solution to the over 100 years problem of dislodging faecal matter into the sea.

At this facility, faecal matter is converted to green energy to provide electricity, and charcoal for domestic fuel.

IRECOP and Dredge Masters Ltd

The team then visited the Integrated Recycling and Composting Plant (IRECOP) and Dredge Masters Ltd, also subsidiaries of Zoomlion where organic waste is turned into compost for agricultural purposes. Plastics are also recycled while Dredge Masters dredge the Odaw River and Korley Lagoon to pave way for free flow of rain water to avoid flooding in Accra, the national capital.

Universal Plastic Products Limited and AH Hotel

Lastly the team visited the Universal Plastic Products Limited (UPPL) where plastic waste is being recycled into chairs, tables, waste bins, bin liners, buckets and containers for water storage among others.

The serene and well ventilated AH Hotel in the heart of East Legon where contemporary lodgers and holiday makers, conferencing and ceremonial receptions are best hosted in Ghana which also belongs to the Commercial and Allied Services Group of JGC was also visited.

JGC is the Apex Group with which subsidiaries of the conglomerate operate under with Zoomlion leading with more than 20 sub-subsidiaries sprouted in the sixteen regions of Ghana.

Zoomlion was establish in 2006 by Dr. Joseph Siaw Agyepong from his mother’s 3 USD exercise bookshop in Accra.
