First Lady rejects salary; set to refund all allowances taken since 2017

The First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has rejected the salary proposed by the Emoluments Committee to be given to spouses of the President and Vice.

In a statement signed by the Director of Communications at the Office of the First Lady, Korkor Bleboo, sighted by Ghanasonline.com, Mrs. Akufo-Addo says she is also going to refund all monies paid to her as allowance since assumption of office in 2017.

The statement indicate the public debate generated around the formalisation of the salary has been “laced with some extremely negative opinions in some cases, which she finds distasteful, seeking to portray her as a venal, self-seeking and self-centred woman, who does not care about the plight of the ordinary Ghanaian.”

She clarifies that, the payment of the monies has existed since the commencement of the Fourth Republic where all former First Ladies have enjoyed, which is not something she requested to be paid to her.

Mrs. Akufo-Addo says she does not want the discussion to serve as a distraction from the good works of the president.
