‘We don’t want to be thieves and die young, provide jobs for us’ – Ghanaian youth tells Akufo-Addo
William Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is President of Ghana
Pending the #FixTheCountry protest that has been scheduled for August 4, 2021, the youth of Ghana are making their demands known to the leadership as has it has already began on social media.
Aside from the infrastructural deficit and system failures bedeviling the country, many are also calling for jobs since unemployment rate is on the ascendancy.
Speaking on the Smart Show Tuesday, July 27, 2021, streamed live on YouTube, Kwame Apraku, a South African-based Ghanaian youth noted the Ghanaian youth need jobs and must be heeded with all urgency.
He told the President, Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to provide jobs to prevent the youth from venturing into pilfering to shorten their lives.
“Please we beg you, we want to work. We don’t want to be thieves and die young. Provide jobs for us,” he pleaded.
He also bemoaned how the “over 60 year olds are still serving in offices whilst the youth are wasting away with their degrees at home”, accusing the leadership for “sleeping on their jobs and we need to come together to hold them accountable.”
Mr. Apraku opined further that, Ghana’s democracy has been structured to favour the leaders with no protection for the ordinary citizen.
To prevent the continual indebtedness to be borne by the future generation, he charged the youth to come in their numbers on August 4, 2021 at the Obra Spot in Nkrumah Circle, to exercise their displeasure with the status quo.
“Our leaders have decided to incur debt for us to pay and because I don’t want to be part, I’m saying enough is enough.”
“Our democracy came to help only the leaders but not everyone. There is no equality in Ghana. Our Constitution is only protecting the leaders and crippling the citizenry. Don’t be a party thinker and put Ghana first,”
And because there’s nothing for the leaders to defend their failure to the youth, the only alternative, Mr. Apraku averred is to attack the leaders (those organising the #FixTheCountry demo) of the youth to instil fear in them.
He advised the youth to think about their future in order not to allow any politician to take them for granted.
