Revealed: Gov’t swerves public sector workers on emoluments committee’s recommendation
Information reaching Ghanasonline.com indicate government has swerved the recommendation given by the Prof. Yaa Ntiamoah Baidu emoluments committee on the percentage increment to be given to public sector workers.
According to Chapter 7 of the report which contains the recommendations, as this portal’s attention was drawn by Norbert Gborgbortsi, Convenor of the Aggrieved Public Sector Workers-Ghana, the percentage given to Article 71 Office Holders should not exceed that of public sector workers.
By inference, the least percentage needed to be added to a public worker is 50%. But speaking with SmartMediaGh.com, Mr. Gborgbortsi noted the Aggrieved Public Sector Workers are demanding the 79% given the president.
He explains that, the report requires the Article 71 beneficiaries to have rather reduced their basic salary to bridge the gap between them and public sector workers. But failure to do so shouldn’t deny the public servants their due.
PCE/2020 REC.05: The percentage increases granted to article 71 office holders in any particular year should not exceed what is granted to public servants.
“In recommending the percentage adjustments to the salaries of article 71 office holders the committee took cognizance of the level of salaries and relativities in their public service. This recommendation, PCE/2020 REC.05 is informed by the government’s stated intention to ensure that base pay in the country is decent and that the gap between the highest and lowest income in the public service is reduced,” the report indicates.
Mr. Gborgbortsi is petrified as to why government has implemented all recommendations in the report including salaries for presidential spouses, leaving that of the public sector workers.
The group is yet to take further action on the development if authorities fail to expedite actions on their demands pending the Wednesday, August 18, 2021 demonstration.
