“I’ll prefer playing in Iraq or Tanzania to Kotoko, Hearts” – Mpong

Former Asante Kotoko Aduana Stars Midfielder, Richard Mpong has indicated he would prefer playing the Iraqi or Tanzania league than playing for Accra Hearts of Oak, or returning to Kotoko.

He says this is due to the poor salaries players take in the Ghana Premier League, making his years spent in it a waste of time.

Speaking on Angel FM’s Floodlights Sports with Sadick “Sports Obama” Adams, closely monitored by Ghanasonline, Mr. Mpong, who currently plays for Elmina Sharks said he received a monthly salary of GHC 400.00 until it was upgraded.

“I was paid GHC 400.00 at Kotoko before Opoku Nti and the management increased it to GHC 700.00 due to my performance”, he said.

Mr. Mpong further indicated he wouldn’t be attracted to playing outside Ghana if he would be paid GHC 3000.00 monthly.

The best salary the former Black Stars midfielder has taken is from Elmina Sharks.

He added there is nothing he can boast of as a player who has won two premier leagues with different teams plus an FA Cup.

“I’ve won the league with both Kotoko and Aduana Stars as well as the FA Cup at Kotoko but gained nothing from winning any of those trophies”, he stated.

He continued “the lands we were promised at Aduana never came. We came home with a 32 inch LED TV.”

The best moment of his career as revealed on the show was when he found the back of the net for the senior national team against Chile.

“My happiest time was when I scored the only goal for the Black Stars during our match against Chile”, he revealed.

He furthered his career was gravely affected “because I don’t have a manager” to offer him advise on certain things.

Even after being unveiled in Iraq, his club, Elmina Sharks didn’t allow him play for the six months he wanted to play even when the Ghana Premier League was on suspension due to Normalization.

The best coach he said he’s worked with, is Didi Dramani at Asante Kotoko.
