Woyome begs Supreme Court over sale of his properties
Ghanaian businessman, Alfred Agbesi Woyome has begged the apex court of the land, Supreme Court to reconsider selling some properties of his to the government.
He disclosed he has a land worth over $15 million which can offset his debt to the state with excess.
The land in question, according to Mr. Woyome is available for usage in the Volta region.
After an auctioneer’s failed attempt to sell Mr. Woyome’s items, the Supreme Court in June 2020 ordered the properties be purchased by government.
Potential buyers of the properties became skeptical about possible restoration of the assets to Mr. Woyome, should power change hands, regarding the political controversies surrounding his issue.
In a letter dated March 4, 2020, to the Minister of Justice and Attorbey General, National Security Minister, Albert Kan Dapaah made the revelations, referencing the Supreme Court’s order to auction Mr. Woyome’s properties to defray the judgement debt of GHC47.2 owed the state from July 2019.
Mr Woyome, who represented himself in court today, urged the apex court to set this aside.
The NDC stalwart explained the land that has many potential buyers is worth $15.5 million dollars, whilst he owes the state less than $10 million which he has always wanted to bring to the attention of the Attorney General.
Chief Justice Kwasi Anning Yeboah, who presided over the panel said Mr. Woyome could have sold the land with the many opportunities he got to pay his debt.
The panel urged him to rather do so since his request is not supported by the rules of court but rather tends to abuse the processes. The case was dismissed.
