Sanitation offenders in Ho to face full rigours of the law – MCE

Sanitation offenders in the Ho Municipality are going to face the full rigours of the law henceforth. The Municipal Environmental Health Officer, Aaron Amedzro has warned.

This comes after the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources emergency dumpsite evacuation in the municipality.

Mr. Amedro says already, there is punishment for offenders, but they could be stiffer after the evacuation exercise.

“Even though the punishment for not having a household bin and throwing refuse at illegal dumpsites is 100 penalty units, it could be harsher this time around, with dumpsites in the municipality being cleared”, he cautioned.

The nationwide exercise to get rid of aged and illegal dumpsites was part of government’s agenda to rid the nation of filth.

He adds the assembly will embark on public education to create awareness on the dangers of improper waste disposal, since whoever falls foul would be dealt with accordingly.

“We will continue to educate them and push for household litter bins. As at now, it is a bye-law in Ho that you have to own a household 240 litre bin, therefore, it’s an offense if you don’t have one”, he stated.

Mr. also admonished Ho residents to adhere to good hygienic practices, highlighting on the need for every household to get a bin.

This, he said, would help address the problem of indiscriminate dumping of refuse in the municipality.

Furthermore, he disclosed a project being undertaken by the assembly and financed by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) called ‘Silage Drying Beds’ which would be used in treating liquid waste in the assembly.

For his part, the Municipal Chief Executive of Ho, Prosper Pi-Bansah, expressed gratitude to the Sanitation Ministry for undertaking such exercise.

According to him, the assembly has been trying to evacuate dumping sites in the municipality but to no avail.

He entreated the residents to desist from littering the environment, since such acts would never go unpublished.
