Volta Region takes share of Solid Waste Treatment Facility
A sod-cutting ceremony has taken place at Akrofu Hewiofe, for the construction of a Solid Waste Treatment plant for the Volta Region.
The Volta Regional Minister, Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, who stood in for President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said the initiative is in line with the development agenda of the country.

He said “water is life and sanitation is dignity,” hence, the need to subscribe to government and the Jospong Group sanitation agenda.
The President said he owes it “a responsibility to contribute to the provision of water and sanitation to the people of Volta Region and the entire nation and also to use it as a tool to fight diseases in this country.”
This, according to the president was the reason he established the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources to coordinate activities in the water, sanitation and hygiene centre.
This has culminated in the establishment of the Integrated Recycling and Composting plants across all the regions.
President Akufo-Addo said “the disposal of solid waste has remained a widespread problem in both urban and rural areas in many developing countries,” reason his government is committed to its eradication.
Mr. Letsa continued the President’s message by adding “the polarization of waste is one of the most critical interventions in waste management, but, many private sector players have been reluctant to enter into these things due to the cost of its financial sustainability, technical visibility and social acceptability.”

He therefore lauded the Jospong Group of Companies for taking the initiative to partner government to curb the waste menace in the country.
He said the benefits of the establishment of the facility would be aiding the municipality to effectively manage its solid waste.
Organic compost that would be derived from the composting, the President said would aid government’s Planting for Food and Jobs Programme, supplementing the One District One Factory as well.
Zoomlion’s partnership with government
Meanwhile, Deputy Managing Director of Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Gloria Opoku Anti, indicated Zoomlion has the requisite capacity to partner government to deal with the sanitation problems in the country.

She adds “good sanitation will flourish the tourism industry in the region, maintaining good sanitation in the region, especially the capital.
General wellbeing of the people, according to Mrs. Anti would also be enhanced as good sanitation contributes massively in the socioeconomic development of the people.
“It also ensures the overall achievement of the President’s vision of making Ghana the cleanest country in Africa,” she added.
“The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals on sanitation and climate change” is another benefit Mrs. Anti averred would come out of the project.
Representing the Minster of Sanitation and Water Resources, the Chief Director of the Ministry, Joseph Obeng Opoku said the plant deploys the latest technologies in sanitation management, which will gravely ameliorate the sanitation canker confronting the region.

He added the project will help improve and sustain the gains made in the sanitation, hygiene and water sector.
Mr. Opoku expressed contentment in the relationship the Sanitation Ministry has enjoyed with the Environmental Service Providers, led by the Jospong Group of Companies.
The facility is expected to be completed in four months, provide work for 70 people directly and 250 indirectly.
