Who takes over as NPP flagbearer after Akufo-Addo: Pollster reveals

Managing Editor of the Daily Dispatch newspaper, Kenneth Ephson has disclosed the next possible leader of the ruling New Patriotic Party.

The pollster says the Minister of Trade and Industry, John Alan Kojo Kyerematen is likely to be the NPP’s flagbearer after President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Speaking with Captain Smart on Angel FM’s Anɔpa Bɔfoɔ closely monitored by Ghanas Online, Mr. Ephson said his claims stem from a poll he conducted with its details contained in his yet to be launched book.

Speaking with some NPP delegates, Mr. Ephson disclosed even though the Assin Central legislator, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong was voted as the most popular figure in the NPP, he placed third on the list of possible flagbearers for the party in the next election.

Bawumia can’t lead NPP after Akufo-Addo

Despite Vice president Mahamudu Bawumia being the second most popular figure in the party according to the polls, he is the fourth person the delegates are likely to choose to lead them in 2024.

The five most popular persons in the NPP according to Ben Ephson are as follows:

  1. Kennedy Ohene Agyapong – MP, Assin Central.
  2. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia – Vice President and running mate of the NPP.
  3. John Alan Kojo Kyerematen – Minister of Trade and Industry.
  4. Joe Ghartey – MP, Esikado-Ketan and Minster of Railways Development.
  5. Dan Botwe – MP for Okere and Minister of Regional Reorganisation and Development.

Despite the order of popularity, the respondent delegates gave a different order of how they would choose someone to lead the party after President Akufo-Addo’s tenure.

This is the order in which they voted with accompanying reasons.

  1. John Alan Kojo Kyerematen – His time is up.
  2. Joe Ghartey – It is time someone from the Western or Central region also leads the party rather than being running mates.
  3. Ken Agyapong – Even though he is the most popular figure in the party, the delegates say he is quick tempered and would dissuade floating voters.
  4. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia – He is young and his time is not up.
  5. Dan Kwaku Botwe – We can’t have another flagbearer from Eastern Region right after Akufo-Addo.

Ben Ephson says his book which is yet to be launched will provide more details.
