It’ll be chaotic to accommodate practice of all beliefs in schools – Carbonu
The President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Angel Carbonu says the school environment will not be conducive for teaching and learning if all students are allowed to freely and fully practice all their beliefs.
He said allowing all students to practice their beliefs will make schools chaotic.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Monday, Mr. Carbonu said, to ensure sanity in schools it is important for students to sacrifice “some aspect of their religious inclination.”
“If the African traditionalist comes to school, brings white stones and wants to be putting Akpeteshie on it by way of religion and you have to agree, and someone else says by my religion I cannot wear shoes, so I have to come barefooted and you have to agree, and another person comes with rafia and you have to agree, at the end of the day, you will have a chaotic environment not suitable for teaching and learning. That is why you have to sacrifice some aspect of the religious inclination to the general rules of the school that is conformed to by everybody,” he said.
Mr. Carbonu’s comment comes on the back of news reports of Achimota School denying two students with dreadlocks admission on the basis of their hairstyle.
Authorities of the Achimota School had on Thursday turned home the dreadlocked students, asking their parents to cut off their hair or find another school for them.
The news has since caught national attention.
After public outrage, GES directed the school to admit the two first-year students in spite of their dreadlocks.
An official at the GES who pleaded anonymity told Citi News the school had been directed to admit the students but the school has insisted that it will not change its decision.
Achimota School continues to be criticized on its position but Angel Carbonu says there is nothing wrong with the position Achimota School has taken.
He argued on Eyewitness News that, students can be allowed to enjoy some liberties in regard to the practice of their religion but some aspects of it must be curtailed and prohibited by universal schools rules that will ensure that the school is effectively managed.
“We have over 4,000 students with individuals rights in Achimota, those students with their rights can be managed and administered with a uniform and universal Achimota rules…They [students] can be managed effectively when there are universal rules and regulations that applies to everybody without favour,” he noted
