$32million on vehicles shows lack of priorities by politicians – Harry Yamson

Fellow of Solidaire Ghana, Harry Yamson, has expressed sadness about the bastardisation of government policy and the public purse.

His comments is focused on the national housing policy drafted in 2013 and launched in 2015, which he says is collecting dust.

He said the policy aimed to increase access to low-income houses for the poor, women, the physically challenged and upgrade slums and has plans to incentivise the local estate development companies.

“We still don’t have any local participation in any significant manner”, and “ask me which slums have been upgraded?” he said.

“Why would you have a policy sit on it for six years and not make it work?” he expressed in disappointment.

Mr Yamson noted that the national housing policy had eight policy objectives, 50 policy initiatives and eight special initiatives.

He said the $200m Saglemi housing saga is an example of wasting public funds and wasteful governments, adding “we are not mindful of resolving the governance issues.”

The Solidaire Ghana Fellow argued but for the lack of priorities, Ghana could have solved low-income housing for $32million.

“People should ask questions of our political leaders, that why is it that $32m to spend on vehicles but not $32million on low-income housing? It is wrong.”

Increasing access for the poor, upgrade slums. Ask me which slums have been upgraded.

The purse has become a football.

He was speaking with Samson Lardy on NewsFile Saturday, August 14, 2021.
