‘Oldest person in the world’: Meet ‘198’ year-old woman who diagnosed Kwame Nkrumah’s mother

The Guinness Book of Records has over the years contained stories that send shivers down the spine of many, particularly for the stories it carries which have been beyond the ordinary.

According to the Guinness book of records, Jeanne Calment, who died at the age of 122 years and 164 days, holds the title of the oldest person to have ever lived. While the oldest living woman is Kane Tanaka, who was born in Japan on Jan. 2, 1903. She received her record at the age of 117 years and 41 days in 2020.

With the two persons described above from the records book, 198-year-old Amodzie is undoubtedly the oldest woman that has existed on planet earth and is still alive after the Methuselahs era.

The age of this woman, who spoke with Captain Smart on Onua Maakye, and subsequently on Smart TV later that night has created a lot of debate with many saying she can’t be that old especially considering how strong she is, aside reports that the old woman stopped visiting the farm barely a year ago.

This woman, Amodzie, is a native of Edu, near Nzema in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region.

After her father refused to take care of her, she had to stay with someone at Half Assini, the capital of the municipality where she assisted her guardian, who was a herbalist.

According to her, she aided an older person carry his load at her tender age when the man professed long life to her, saying she will grow older with grey hair before departing the earth.

Delving into the debate

Now, to settle the debate as the oldest person that has lived and is still alive in the post historic era, Amodzie, was the woman that went to the bush to pick the herbs that were diagnosed to Nyaaba, mother of Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, at Half Assini.

According to the old woman, Nyaaba had grey hair when she presented her pregnancy, which she thought was a disease, to the herbalist.

Amodzie at the time was older than Nyaaba and had been married for two years. It turned out that, Nyaaba, who had been married for years seeking for fruit of the womb was finally pregnant after Amodzie’s guardian urged her to continually take the herbs.

According to history books, Nyaaba had never given birth at age 42 until she gave birth to Kwame Nkrumah on September 21, 1909.

Calculating Amodzie’s age

So if Nkrumah was to be alive, he would have been a 112 years next month. His mother, Nyaaba, delivered her around age 45 per approximations –with books posited by Dr. Adu Boahen and others indicating.

Now, Amodzie, was older than Nyaaba, Nkrumah’s mother, whom she collected the herbs for, and if per approximation, she was 10 years older than her, it means Amodzie was 55 years when Nkrumah’s mother delivered at age 45. Even though she says she was way older than Nyaaba.

In that sense, Amodzie’s 55 years would be added to Nkrumah’s 112 anniversary, which would sum up to a 167 years.

So the age at which Nkrumah’s mother gave birth is certain as several books have recorded. Nkrumah’s age is also certain. The only uncertainty is the age of Amodzie at the time Nkrumah was born. With the approximation of Amodzie’s age at the birth of Nkrumah, which is 55 years, even if the approximation is so wrong and 7 more years is scrapped off her age, the woman’s age will still be 160 years, making her the oldest person on earth and to have ever existed in post historic times.

Amodzie advises current generation

Advising the younger generation whilst speaking on Smart TV’s Smart Show Monday, August 16, 2021, Amodzie told young ladies of today to be submissive to their husbands and hold no grudges with anyone.

“[Women of today], If you see a man with money, even when you have a husband, you cheat with the rich man and that affect their husbands business. If you respect your husband, it’s good for you. Some disrespect their husbands because they’re not rich. That’s why many die anyhow. The blessings in marriage make you grow old.”

“The wellbeing of your children is dependent on how you the woman will behave at home. Stay at home,” she advised.

Meanwhile, the Guinness book of record has expressed interest in conducting investigations to arrive at the actual age of this old woman who can still walk on her own without any assistance.
