The reason behind Otabil’s loud silence; Captain Smart reveals

Blessed Godsbrain Smart, the Smart Show host on Smart TV has said he is unsurprised about the sudden surprised loud silence adopted by Pastor Dr. Mensa Otabil.

The founder of the International Central Gospel Church was outspoken on issues pertaining to governance and the economy during the erstwhile John Mahama administration.

With his incessant criticism of the then government and as a man of God, many expected him to have equally put the ruling New Patriotic Party on its toes at the turn of events.

But to the dismay of many, the theologian, motivational speaker and entrepreneur has been silent over what many regard as a worse administration compared to the era of the National Democratic Congress.

In 2014 when the cedi was largely considered as absolutely inferior to the dollar, Dr. Otabil wished it would go back to when it was valued at GH¢0.92 to $1.

He indicated that was the state of the Cedi in 2007 when former president John Agyekum Kufuor’s administration opted to redenominate the Ghanaian Cedi.

Dr Otabil made this comment at a time when the cedi was valued around GH₵4 to $1.

Speaking at his annual ‘Greater Works Conference’ in Accra, he is quoted to have said “…Each one of us must have hope…in a hopeless situation…so tomorrow morning if the Cedi devalues by 50 percent, how many of you will still have hope?” he asked.

“So, if the Cedi – now I hear is $1 to Ghc4, is it? Close to, around or whatever. I’m not the finance minister. I wish that it will go back to 92 pesewas to $1 – but what if it gets to 6, what if it gets to 7, what if it gets to 8?” he wondered.

Meanwhile, the cedi is now equivalent to GH₵6.00, which is 50% depreciation in value to the rate he commented on in 2014.

His silence according to Captain Smart is because he is utterly disappointed in the NPP government, and commenting on the state of affairs would tantamount to social backlash on things he said earlier.

He was speaking on the rate of corruption which is on the ascendency at the NPP’s era per the Auditor General’s report on Tuesday, August 17, 2021.
