‘I’ll quit teaching to become a cleaner if I get the opportunity’ – SHS teacher laments

A government teacher has disclosed her willingness to quit teaching to become a cleaner if the opportunity presents itself.

Sarah Yeboah Mensah, a Master’s Degree holder who teaches Biology and Integrated Science at the Senior High School (SHS) says she believes the diligence in the remuneration she will take as a cleaner might be better than her salary as a teacher.

Speaking with some other colleagues on Onua TV/FM’s ‘Maakye’ Wednesday, January 26, 2021, Mrs. Yeboah Mensah noted she takes less than GH₵3,000.00 as an SHS teacher with a Master’s degree.

“If I get the opportunity to be a cleaner somewhere and the salary is okay, I’ll quit teaching and do that. I’m a Master’s degree holder and teaches Biology and Integrated Science in the SHS and my take home is less than 3000,” she told host, Captain Smart.

She added the situation of teachers is so bad such that, some of their colleagues have to starve throughout school hours, and solicit for transportation before they can go home after school.

Speaking further on Ghana’s education and challenges of teachers, another teacher who also teaches Mathematics at the SHS asserted the politicisation of the educational system is taking a toll on teachers, making them suffer in line of duty.

“Nothing goes on well. They’ve politicised our education and it’s us the teachers who suffer the repercussions. For two years now I’ve never been on vacation because I teach both green and gold tracks without any extra duty allowance. I’ll never allow any of my kids to teach because my lifestyle doesn’t even encourage them,” she expressed.

One other who teaches at the kindergarten disclosed that, at a career day with the kids in her class, “none of my KG pupils said he/she will be a teacher when I asked them [their future career]. They said the president said a teacher cannot be rich so they won’t become teachers.”
