Fighting poor sanitation; Abena Dapaa calls for all hands on deck

Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaa is calling for all hands on deck to eradicate the incessant filth that has engulfed the streets of Ghana.

The minister says a deliberate effort to abate littering of streets is the surest way Ghana can attain her cleanest city in Africa feat.

She made the call when President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo led a sod cutting ceremony for the construction of a Solid Waste Treatment Facility at Effiduase in the Eastern region.

Speaking at the event, the minister said Ghanaians now have a cause to stop littering as bins are going to be provided to collect waste to fee the various treatment and recycling plants being constructed by Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL) across the country.

“The value chain to be employed in these project would complement the various assemblies work of eradicating all garbage from the streets. There would be arrangements to set up a transfer station where garbage would be deposited before they’re transferred to the plant site to filter the various components to produce their final products”, she explained.

Abena Dapaa further indicated compost from the various recycling sites will “supplement government’s Planting for Food and Jobs programme.”

She said the treatment plant, the first of its type in the Eastern region, being replicated in other regions will boost the health of the citizenry since they will aid in getting rid of filth.

Mrs. Dapaa said the entire project being carried across the country indicates how good health is paramount to the president, the reason for which he provided free water for Ghanaians to keep healthy when coronavirus hit Ghana, which she “can assure you that, measures are in place to provide free water for Ghanaians till end of the year.”

President Akufo-Addo said in his speech that Ghana’s quest to become the cleanest country in Africa would become a reality considering the collaboration between the Sanitation ministry and Zoomlion Ghana Limited.

He lauded the Minister and Chief Executive Officer of ZGL, Joseph Siaw Agyepong for the nationwide project.
