Gov’t, Jospong reengineers Tema Sewer Network, cuts sod for Ashaiman Treatment Plant

President Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has cut sod for the construction of a Sewer Network and Waste Water Treatment Plant in Tema.

The sod cutting ceremony also included the construction of a Solid Waste Treatment Facility at Ashaiman.

The two projects are being executed in partnership with Zoomlion Ghana Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies.

President Akufo-Addo says the partnership indicates his government’s readiness to support the private sector in steering the nation’s development.

“These projects are further indicatives of the efforts being made by the Akufo-Addo government to facilitate private sector empowerment in the positioning of needed infrastructures, in this case, to improve the management of sanitation”, he explained.

He said the completion of the project will resurrect a collapsed similar facility constructed some 57 years ago.

“Tema is the foremost well-planned community in Ghana, with the central shield network, four main stations, and a treatment facility, which was constructed and commissioned in 1963 and subsequently rehabilitated in 1994.

This facility, however, has been shut down because almost all the sewer lines have become obsolete, thereby creating environmental pollution, and occasion serious health hazards for residents”, he revealed.

According to the President, the number of residents within the Tema enclave is over 360,000, whilst the sewerage plant was initially designed to cater for less than 15,000 people. This, he said warranted the establishment of a new one to cater for the increasing population.

“The initial design capacity of the sewerage plant was between 20,000 cubic meters of waste water per day for a total population of 14,937. The current population of Tema according to the Ghana Statistical Service is 360,828. The sewerage system can therefore not cope the volume generated as a result of increased population”, he ellaborated.

President Akufo-Addo in furtherance of his address expatiated the need for the “400-meter tonne state-of-the-art Integrated Recycle and Compost Plant [that] would also be constructed at Ashaiman and it’s expected to receive, sort and process some 400 tonnes of municipal solid waste per day, to provide a sustainable solution to the solid waste development problem to the residents of Ashaiman and its environs.”

He expressed gratitude to the Jospong Group of Companies and its partners for availing themselves to help deal with the waste situation in the country.

The President also reiterated his government’s commitment in aiding the private sector to provide the needed infrastructure, especially in the waste management sector, to help curb the uneding filth in the country, and creating employment for the youth as well.

Executive Chairman of the Jospong Group of Companies, Joseph Siaw Agyepong thanked the president for his unflinching support for the private sector and his outfit’s readiness to complete the task in the next 18 months.

“Your excellency, please permit me to express my heartfelt appreciation to you and your team for your love and commitment to Ghanaian businesses in the private sector. It is evident that your vision since the commencement of your tenure of office has been for Ghanaian businesses to thrive.

It has been consistently proven that the private sector is very dear to your heart. I do not take this gesture for granted and on behalf of the Board and Management of Jospong Group of Companies, our partners, we say thank you very much and God bless you”, he expressed.
