Galamsey fight: Media General’s GCOO ‘writes a memo’ to the gods, ancestors

Nuamah Eshun-Famiyeh is Group Chief Operating Officer of Media General

The Group Chief Operating Officer (GCOO) of Media General Ghana Limited, Nuamah Eshun-Famiyeh, has waged a strong war against illegal miners in the country, calling on the gods and ancestors of the land to deal with them.

He says the powerful individuals behind illegal mining also known as ‘galamsey’, have always denied knowledge of the practice whenever they are found to be associated with the act.

During his address at the launch of the Company’s Ghana Month Monday, March 03, 2025, Mr. Nuamah-Famiyeh invoked the powers of the gods and ancestors of the land to deal with perpetrators of galamsey.

Stressing on the ramifications of their activities on the forest reserves and water bodies in the country, he reminded the ancestors and the gods of their potency by “writing them a memo” to deal with whoever has intentions to make wealth at the expense of Ghana’s environment.

“Growing up, we were told that in the rivers and forests lived gods and ancestors who protected us. But somehow, everybody that has been fingered in galamsey claims that ‘it wasn’t me’ and nothing seems to be happening.

“We are at our wit ends Nananom, and today I am asking our Nananom and our gods who live in the rivers, like the educated people say, ‘I’m writing them a memo’. It is just a gentle reminder. Please visit these wicked souls in the middle of the night.

“And when you visit them, please do the needful. Just do the needful and we shall be grateful for what you have done for us when morning breaks and we find out that they are no longer with us and we can live in peace and restore our water bodies,” he called.

He also used the opportunity to highlight on the need to foster unity as a people with a common heritage, which he indicated is the purpose of the Ghana Month celebration being commemorated through the entire month of March.

“Ghana Month is when we embrace culture, when we learn to cherish our customs, our food, faith, togetherness and the love we have for each of the tribes that are resident in this country.

“Let us learn our culture, let us love our food, let us love our customs, our costumes and above all, let us love each other because, embedded in the story of this land is a people who are united by faith and have come together by the land that we have been given to share,” he concluded.
