List of top ten Senior High Schools in Ashanti Region

The Ashanti Region has the highest number of senior high schools in Ghana compared to other regions.

There is a total of 122 public Senior High Schools which are classified into category A, B and C according to the 2019 schools’ register as released by the Ghana Education Service.

Academic performance at WASSCE, school’s achievement, infrastructure, and facilities are among some of such important ranking factors.

As Kumasi High School was acknowledged as Category ‘A’ school in 2017, which indisputably makes them among the top 10 schools in Ashanti Region, other notable schools also dropped from Category A to a Category B school.

Among them are Kumasi Anglican SHS, Tweneboah Koduah SHS, Konongo Odumasi SHS, St. Monica’s SHS, Effiduasi SHS etc.

It’s worthy of note that there are only six remaining category A Schools in Ashanti Region as at the time Success Africa put this together.

Opoku Ware School (Category A)

Opoku Ware School, often referred to as OWASS, is an all-boys high school in Santasi, a suburb of Kumasi, which is the capital of the Ashanti region of Ghana.

It was established in 1952, as one of the five Catholic schools in Ghana that year. The school was named after Asantehene, Opoku Ware I.

T.I. Ahmadiyya Senior High School (Category A)

Kumasi High School (Category A)

Kumasi High School, often referred to as KUHIS, is an all boys Senior High School in the Ashanti region of Ghana. It was established in 1962, by S. K. Amoah.

The students are known collectively as Mmeranteɛ. It is located in Gyinyase near Ahinsan Estate. The motto of the school is Truth conquers.

Prempeh College (Category A)

Prempeh College is a public secondary school for boys located in Kumasi, the capital city of the Ashanti Region, Ghana.

Prempeh College was founded in 1949 through a collaboration between the Kumasi Traditional Council, the Presbyterian and Methodist churches in the then Gold Coast and the British Colonial Government.

St. Louis Senior High School (Category A)

St. Louis Senior High School is an all-female school located at Oduom, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region.

St. Louis Senior High School was opened in 1952, with an initial group of 12 girls.

Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ Senior High School (Category A)

Yaa Asantewaa Girls’ Senior High School is an all female Senior High School which was established in 1951 by Ghana’s first President Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

The school was founded in 1960 with funds from the Ghana Education Trust. Yaa Asantewaa is named after the Queen mother of Ejisu Yaa Asantewaa who led a war against the British Colonialists.

The school is located in a suburb called Tanoso in the Atwima Mponua District in Kumasi – Ashanti Region.

Kumasi Anglican Senior High School

The Kumasi Anglican Senior High School is a co-educational secondary school founded in 1973. It is situated in Asem, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

In the early 1920s, the KASS site was acquired from the Amakom chief by the English Church Mission (E.C.M.) with the intention of establishing an institution to train clergy, and facilitate the growth of the church in the Gold Coast.

Bishop M.S. O’Rocke (1913–23) secured the services of the monks of the Benedictine Order (O.S.B.) from Nashdom Abbey, England, to run the newly founded institution. In 1952, St. Augustine’s Theological College was established.

St. Monica’s Senior High School

St. Monica’s Senior High School is a Girls’ second-cycle institution at Mampong in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

The school can be located on the Kumasi-Mampong Highway. It is 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Kumasi and lies on a hilly area making the environment a cold one.

Konongo Odumase Senior High

Konongo Odumase Senior High School is a coeducational second-cycle institution at Konongo-Odumase in the Asante Akyem Central District of the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

The school was started as Konongo Odumasi Secondary School but was renamed Konongo Odumase Senior High School around 2005 when the Kufuor government decided to redesignate all Senior Secondary Schools in the country as Senior High School.

The school begun with twenty-one boys and five girls.

This was as part of the “Accelerated Development Plan for Education” started after Kwame Nkrumah’s Convention People’s Party won the 1951 Gold Coast legislative election.

Effiduase Senior High School

Effisco is a second cycle institution in Ghana in the Ashanti region.

It appeared early in the Ashanti Region as a modern school of commerce (modesco) which was located at Effiduasi Akwamu in the year 1943 by Mr.E.R Addow.

Later on, the school was changed from modesco to Effisco which is now located at Effiduasi Oseikrom off Effiduasi-Accra road.
